Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka’s medieval royal capital between the 11th and 13th centuries, and today its preserved ruins are among the finest examples of an ancient planned city in Asia. Cycling through the shaded archaeological park reveals a world of royal palaces, giant stone Buddha statues, sacred temples, and a hydraulic irrigation system that was centuries ahead of its time.
