Yapahuwa is one of Sri Lanka’s lesser-known but truly spectacular ancient heritage sites, a 13th-century rock fortress that served as the island’s royal capital and once housed the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The ornate stone stairway leading to the royal audience hall is considered a masterpiece of medieval Sri Lankan architecture, and the site rewards explorers with both historical depth and commanding views.
