Kataragama

The nightly ritual ceremonies, offerings and the astonishing spectacle of devotional practice make Kataragama one of the most atmospheric places of worship.

Koneswaram Temple, Trincomalee

The Koneswaram Temple is one of Sri Lanka’s significant Hindu heritage sites, a sacred Shaivite temple perched on the Swami Rock headland above the Indian Ocean, with temple walls that appear to dissolve into the blue horizon. The site commands views across Trincomalee Harbour and the ocean beyond, and its ancient origins and sacred Lingam shrines make it one of the five ancient Shiva temples of Sri Lanka.

Adam’s Peak

Adam’s Peak is Sri Lanka’s most iconic pilgrimage mountain, a sacred summit rising 2,243 metres above sea level, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians alike for the mysterious sacred footprint enshrined at its summit. The pre-dawn climb through a pathway of tea-light lanterns, culminating in the sunrise above the clouds, is one of the most spiritually moving experiences in all of Asia.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy is one of Asia’s most important places of pilgrimage, housing the revered Tooth Relic of the Buddha within a lakeside complex of gilded roofs and ornate wooden carvings. The daily Tevava rituals, accompanied by traditional drumming and flute music, offer an atmosphere of spiritual beauty. The temple can be visited year-round, with the Esala Perahera festival in July or August.
