Kataragama is one of Sri Lanka’s multi-religious pilgrimage centres, a sacred jungle town revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and indigenous Vedda communities, all of whom converge here to venerate the deity Skanda, whose sacred precinct lies here. The nightly ritual ceremonies, offerings and the astonishing spectacle of devotional practice make Kataragama one of the most atmospheric places of worship.
